Worked example: choosing the next market for a coffee exporter

Worked example · 6 min read · Updated 2026-09-05

An illustrative workflow for a green coffee exporter deciding between three candidate markets. Every input below is available on the public directory pages.

Frame the comparison

Rather than asking which market is biggest, ask which market has importers of your size buying from origins you can undercut on freight, quality or certification.

Read three numbers per market

Each country page shows officially reported import value, the value covered by held shipment records, and the ranked importers behind it. Together they tell you both the size of the prize and how much of it you can actually see.

  • Officially reported import value — the ceiling
  • Number of distinct importers — fragmented markets are easier to enter
  • Origin mix — concentration on one origin signals a contract you must displace

Shortlist, then verify

Pick the two markets with the most fragmented importer base, then open individual company pages to confirm cadence and lot size before allocating travel or sampling budget.

Frequently asked

Where do the official figures come from?
Country pages cross-check held shipment records against UN Comtrade and, for the United States, Census Bureau statistics for the same HS code and period.
